In the movie Sweet Charity, the main character is tired of being a taxi
dancer and wants to do more with her life. She goes to an employment firm
looking for a new, more regular job. During her interview she does some things
that are good and also some things that are bad. Charity applied in
person, shook hands with the interviewer, and attempted to dress the part which
are all good. Now for what Charity did wrong. The first thing is that she
didn’t research the qualifications and tasks for the job. “These tasks are identified in a
current and accurate job description. All tools and techniques used in
screening should be designed to focus on essential skills of the job and the
person’s ability to perform them” (Human
Resources, Quality Service & Training, Hospitality & Restaurant
Marketing, Pg. 417). Since Charity
didn’t do this, when listed all the tasks and asked if she could perform them
she just replied with “no”. She then said “no” at one point before the
interviewer even asked the next question. “Screening interviews are conducted early in the
process to help determine whether the person meets basic requirements. They are
also used…to set the tone for other steps in the hiring process” (Human Resources, Quality Service &
Training, Hospitality & Restaurant Marketing, Pg. 419). The next thing she did wrong was beg. It is very
unprofessional to beg the interviewer to hire you even when you know you don’t
have the qualifications. The next step that Charity should have done was ask
where and how she could learn the tasks the interviewer listed. This would’ve
showed that she was willing to improve. It would also allow her to come back
and be better qualified. “Screening
helps ensure that the best candidates are chosen for vacant positions. The goal
is to find the best-qualified persons regardless of age, race, or other traits,
and every applicant should be given a fair chance” (Human Resources, Quality Service &
Training, Hospitality & Restaurant Marketing, Pg. 428).

Week One EOC: Best and Worst Jobs
I've only had two jobs so far. The
first one I was a sales associate at Anthropologie. I absolutely loved working
there. My co-workers were so kind and the customers were amazing. The location
I was at did not have a huge amount of tourists but had more locals. The
relationship between the customers and the associates was great. It made me
want to go to work everyday in order to catch up with a customer that I hadn’t seen
in a while. It also was fun because sometimes the managers would have the
workers dress in clothes from the store and take pictures for the store’s
Instagram. Being a fashion student, I absolutely loved this. The managers at
the store were also amazing in teaching me what I needed to know and were willing
to work around my school schedule. “Team members feel a closer connection to
their coworkers, managers, the operation, and its goals. Teamwork also
reinforces the contributions each member makes to the establishment”( Human
Resources, Quality Service & Training, Hospitality & Restaurant Marketing,
327). All of the workers in the
store were close to each other and it overall was a great experience. My second
job however is a different story. For my job now, its not that the work I have
to do is bad but rather the people I work with. No one is close to one another.
This makes me not want to go to work. The girls at the store I am at now have
no desire to be friends with anyone else that works at the store. This makes
the job terrible. I think that a job classifies as horrible or the worst when the
work environment is unpleasant. The managers are fine at my current job its
just the employees that aren’t managers that make the environment unpleasant.
Week 1 EOC: My Voice
- Working in the fashion world has always been a dream of mine. Fashion allows people to express themselves to others; what a person wears helps them show not only a person’s creativity but also one’s personality. All facets of the fashion industry excite me; however I am more focused on the business side, fashion merchandising and marketing, rather than fashion design. The business side of fashion industry has many choices for a career. One can become a fashion buyer, visual merchandiser, or even a boutique owner. I am currently a college student fulfilling my dreams. I am pursuing my Bachelor of Science degree in fashion and retail management at Art Institute of Las Vegas. After attending college for a year and a half, I have learned to love marketing. I find it intriguing how marketing is not only about presenting and promoting a product in a certain way but it also includes the research of consumers and how they are influenced. Since realizing that this is my passion and my focus, it is hard for me to not see an ad or marketing campaign and analyze it. When I graduate, I would like to work for a company where I can share my ideas, passion and creativity with people around me.
